About Romeo y Julieta

Romeo y Julieta, the Spanish title of Shakespeare's play, was founded in 1875 by Inocencio Álvarez and Manín García. In 1903 it was bought by José "Pepín" Rodríguez Fernández, former head of the Cabañas factory in Havana. Its most famous vitola, the Churchill, 7 x 47, is named for Sir Winston Churchill, perhaps the brand's best-known smoker.

After the revolution the Cuban government nationalized the brand, and Habanos S.A. still makes and sells it from Cuba. The brand also moved to the Dominican Republic, where Altadis makes the non-Cuban Romeo y Julieta in La Romana, directed for the American market by Altadis U.S.A.

I have two Romeo y Julieta notes: the 1875 Churchill and the Capulet 75th Anniversary Toro, which scored 87.

    Churchill · Medium

    Leather , Cedar , Toast , Nuts

A classic, well-defined cigar with solid construction and a very traditional profile.

    87 points, My Score

    Capulet 75th Anniversary — Toro

    Toro · Connecticut · Medium

    Toast , Cream , Bread , Cedar

A Connecticut with plenty of character, leaning more toward toasted, nutty and structured flavors than overt creaminess.
