About H. Upmann

Hermann Dietrich Upmann was a banker who arrived in Havana in 1843 to handle business for an import-export firm from Bremen. In 1844 he bought a cigar factory on San Miguel Street and started making H. Upmann cigars, while also opening a bank that served tobacco dealers and makers. The bank eventually collapsed, and by 1922 the brand was bankrupt.

In 1937 it was bought by Menéndez, García y Cía, the makers of Montecristo, who ran it until the Cuban government nationalized it in 1960. Today the Cuban H. Upmann is rolled by hand in Havana for Habanos S.A., with tobacco from Vuelta Abajo. Its Magnum vitolas, such as the Magnum 50 and Magnum 56, have marked several limited editions.

After the revolution, the brand also moved to the Canary Islands and then to the Dominican Republic, where Altadis makes the non-Cuban H. Upmann in La Romana.

My notes include both: the Cuban Magnum Finite, Edición Limitada 2024, which I smoked in Iceland, at 89 points, and the non-Cuban Vintage Cameroon Robusto Larga.
