Alfonso is the brand of Nelson Alfonso's Selected Tobacco, made at Tabacos de Costa Rica. It aims high: its Extra Añejo sells for $29.99 to $49.99 per cigar.
The Gran Selección debuted at the 2023 PCA trade show in Las Vegas, limited to 200 boxes of 25 per size. It has an Ecuadorian habano wrapper, a Peruvian binder and filler from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua, and its tobacco ages five years in total: first in Spanish cedar rooms with cycled humidity, then in French oak rooms, a process the company says was inspired by winemaking.
My note is the Gran Selección, a cigar that reveals itself slowly and grows richer in the second half, at 91 points.
