Epicure No. 2 — Robusto

Somewhere between the cold air and a slower pace, I reached for this Cuban puro — paired with a local Icelandic rum that complemented the moment perfectly.

About Hoyo de Monterrey
José Gener registered Hoyo de Monterrey in 1865, after buying a tobacco farm in Vuelta Abajo, Cuba, and named the line after it. The name refers to the hollow, concave land that premium tobacco growers favor. In 1931 the firm Fernández, Palicio y Cía bought Hoyo de Monterrey along with La Escepción.
In the forties the house created the Le Hoyo series for its Swiss distributor, A. Dürr, along with the Châteaux series that later gave rise to the Davidoff line. The Epicure No. 2 is one of its most prized vitolas among connoisseurs.
After 1959 Fernando Palicio left Cuba and sold his brands to the Villazon family, who made Hoyo de Monterrey in Tampa with Honduran tobacco for the American market. Today General Cigar makes the Honduran line.
My note is the Cuban Epicure No. 2, which I smoked in Iceland with a local rum, at 90 points.
