About Davidoff
Zino Davidoff was born in 1906 in what is now Ukraine and grew up in Geneva, where from 1926 he ran a tobacco shop that would become famous. In 1946 he created the Château series, named after great Bordeaux estates, and in 1967 Cubatabaco asked him to create a cigar under his own name. The first Cuban Davidoffs, rolled at El Laguito in Havana, came out in 1968.
In 1970 Oettinger of Basel acquired the Davidoff brand. After disagreements with Cuba over quality, in 1989 Zino publicly burned more than a hundred thousand cigars he felt did not live up to his name. In 1990 production moved to the Dominican Republic, with Hendrik Kelner's Tabadom, and in 1991 the first Dominican Davidoffs were released. The Château series became the Grand Cru. Zino died in Geneva in 1994, at 87.
Today Oettinger Davidoff makes its cigars in the Dominican Republic and Honduras, under Davidoff and other brands such as Camacho.
I have four Davidoff notes. The Dominicana Corona Larga, at 94 points, is among my highest scores.
