About Arturo Fuente
Arturo Fuente was born in Güines, Cuba, in 1887. He came to Florida as a young man and, in 1912, opened A. Fuente & Company in West Tampa. By 1922 the factory had some 500 workers, and two years later it burned down while he was in Cuba buying tobacco. That was the first of many fires in the family's story, and every time they started again.
His son Carlos Fuente Sr. took over the company in 1956, buying it from his brother for one dollar. In the seventies the family tried Nicaragua and Honduras and lost factories in both, to the Sandinista revolution in 1978 and to a fire in 1979. On September 4, 1980, they opened Fuente LTD in Santiago, Dominican Republic, and that is where the house found its home. The Hemingway series came out in the early eighties with a figurado shape that was new to the industry.
In 1992 Carlos "Carlito" Fuente Jr. created Fuente Fuente OpusX, the first 100% Dominican puro. It was released on November 18, 1995, Arturo's birthday. In 2018 the family announced a return to Estelí, Nicaragua, with a new factory.
Arturo Fuente is one of the houses I have written about most, with four notes. The Don Carlos Personal Reserve, at 95 points, is among my highest scores.
